The introduction of the first laser safety scanner Laser Sentinel from Datalogic marks the beginning of a next phase for the manufacturer Datalogic.

Datalogic has made its mark over the past 45 years as an innovative manufacturer of safety light curtains. Sentinel stands for sentinel. A sentinel who, in the distant past, made it impossible for invaders to enter the city unseen. In a similar way, the Laser Sentinel ensures that someone does not enter the dangerous zone of a machine unnoticed and is injured as a result.

The Laser Sentinel offers simple and most flexible safety solutions for various types of automatic or semi-automatic machines. Especially where the dangerous zone is not straightforward or installation space is limited and requires maximum protection. Some examples are robot cells, AGVs and CNC bending machines.

During development, attention was paid to good overall industrial usability. By applying advanced algorithms in the laser scanner, the Laser Sentinel is more resistant to dirt, smoke and extraneous light. A 275˚ detection angle – compared to the until recently 'usual' 270˚ used by others – simplifies the mechanical installation.

Especially when mounting on a corner, the extra 5˚ will make a difference. With detection and safety zones of 40 and 5.5 meters respectively, a longer braking distance can be used when used on AGVs. A longer braking distance that in turn benefits the ability to move the AGV at a higher speed.

With 70 adjustable zones, the Laser Sentinel supports AGV applications, so that the correct detection pattern is always present at different speeds or locations. As a result, the AGV handles changing conditions better. The measuring resolution is 0.12˚ and is available for accurate navigation via the existing Ethernet port. The response time of the Laser Sentinel is 62msec. This super fast response time benefits the braking distance and increases the possibilities in terms of movement speed of AGVs. In machine protection, this translates into more compact safety zones and less floor space required to protect a machine or installation

Simple and flexible is expressed, among other things, by the integration of 5 resolutions in one device (30, 40, 50, 70 and 150 mm): one scanner model that can be configured for multiple applications.
The broad usability of the Laser Sentinel is further underlined by meeting the highest safety classification for laser scanners: Safety category Type 3 (EN61496-1), PL d (EN ISO 1384901) and SIL 2 (IEC 61508)

Master/slave
Up to 4 Laser Sentinel laser scanners can be connected via Ethernet. This means 1 master with a maximum of 3 slaves. Only the master needs to be connected to the safety relay and any required encoder. The slaves communicate with the master via Ethernet without the intervention of separate control unit(s)! Resulting in (a) simplified installation. Which in turn offers advantages during installation and commissioning, as well as later during service and maintenance.

In terms of appearance, the color display will be immediately noticed, so that the status of the scanner can be clearly read even from a great distance. The rotatable M12 connectors also stand out due to their ease of installation and the possibility of using standard connection cables. And last but not least: constructed in a solid, robust housing, the Laser Sentinel guarantees a well-secured and available installation, even under rough conditions.
