Disruptive

Of course it is no longer a buzzword, but I still want to write something about it. The message of disruptive innovations is – and remains – that new technology and probably a new form of organization makes the old approach redundant. On the one hand, this inspires fear. Retail and specifically Vroom & Dreesmann perhaps realized too late that the market was changing.

On the other hand, this offers technology companies opportunities. The question then is: on which side? During the IT Room Infra event, John Laban spoke about the developments in data centers and warned the audience, 'software eats hardware'. If a business model for data centers and computer rooms is based on hardware, it sounds disruptive, but not in a nice way. We also had speakers about the hydrogen economy, photonics, Internet of Things for LEDs, buildings, cities and the process industry. Innovations are underway on all fronts of technology within the FHI sectors, which seem to be drastically changing the world. I also notice that the members are extremely busy and that of course goes hand in hand with economic developments.

Collectivity offers opportunities

The collectivity of technology companies provides a basis for seizing opportunities. If we look specifically at IoT applications, several examples emerge in which members from various industries know how to find each other. I recently noticed the same thing with the theme of Smart Battery Technology. Members from different communities may suddenly come together by accident. In 2018, themes that are relevant across sectors will be discussed. FHI organizes networking moments to make use of the expertise and qualities of members. Seizing opportunities with disruptive technology simply needs a healthy foundation and continuity. Paul Petersen
