Drie topwetenschappers vertellen bevlogen over fundamenteel onderzoek en de praktische implicaties. Over hun fascinatie voor de wetenschap \u00e9n voor de wereld.<\/p>\n<p>Klaas geeft mij een uur van zijn tijd en gretig probeer ik zijn fascinatie voor de wereld, voor de wetenschap en voor de techniek te vangen. Hij vertelt enthousiast over zijn gedrevenheid om vanuit een diep verankerd verantwoordelijkheidsgevoel de vertaalslag te maken van de fundamentele wetenschap naar de praktische wereld om ons heen.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"text bg--offwhite\">\n\t<div class=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"text__content text__content--1-col\">\n\t\t\t<h4>Thermodynamica<\/h4>\n<p>\u201cThermodynamica is de basis van onze op energie gebaseerde maatschappij,\u201d zegt Klaas terwijl hij de thermodynamica in een historisch kader plaatst. \u201cThermodynamica vindt haar oorsprong rond het jaar 1800. In Engeland was net de stoommachine uitgevonden en dit was het startschot van de industri\u00eble revolutie. De natuurkundigen van die tijd waren gebiologeerd door het probleem hoe ze zo\u2019n machine effici\u00ebnter konden maken.\u201d De kracht van de wetenschap lag in praktische toepasbaarheid. Denk aan de ontwikkeling van stoomschepen die in \u00e9\u00e9n keer van Engeland naar de Verenigde Staten konden varen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDe ontwikkeling van de stoommachine was voor de theoretische natuurkunde een cruciale stap. Het begrip \u2018energie\u2019 is als het ware ontdekt in deze periode en heeft enorme vleugels gekregen. De industri\u00eble revolutie was een bepalende periode voor de natuurkunde \u2013 de drijfveer om apparaten te begrijpen \u2013 op een manier die daarna niet meer vertoond is.\u201d Hier haakt Klaas in op de moderne wereld en de problemen waar wij noodzakelijk de confrontatie mee moeten aangaan: de energietransitie en de klimaatcrisis.<\/p>\n<p>Tijdens het gesprek wordt klaas steeds enthousiaster over zijn lezing. De historische interactie tussen wetenschap en industrie en de dilemma\u2019s die iedere volgende stap impliceert, fascineren hem. Hij raakt bevlogen door de interactie tussen industrie en wetenschap. Een verband dat aan het begin van de 19de eeuw in optima forma het fundament vormde voor de natuurkunde.<\/p>\n<h4>E\u00e9n theorie<\/h4>\n<p>Vanuit een omweg is Klaas bij de thermodynamica beland. Hij verbaast zich erover dat het verhaal dat begint bij de stoommachine en eindigt bij zwarte gaten \u00e9\u00e9n theorie is en nog nooit zo verteld is. Van oorsprong was Klaas niet ge\u00efnteresseerd in de thermodynamica. Of zoals hij het zelf zegt: \u201cIk begreep het niet.\u201d Zijn interesse lag bij de zwarte gaten. \u201cDe vreemdste objecten ooit ontdekt en beschreven.\u201d In Cambridge werkte Klaas in de omgeving van Stephen Hawking en werd zijn belangstelling voor zwarte gaten gewekt. E\u00e9n van Hawkings grootste ontdekkingen was dat zwarte gaten verdampen \u00e9n een temperatuur hebben. Doordat zwarte gaten straling hebben verliezen ze heel langzaam energie.
