Review Power Electronics & Energy Storage event<\/h3>\r\n

The Netherlands and Belgium are at the forefront of the global energy transition. 'Under the hood', innovative power electronics and energy storage technologies make this transition possible. During the Power Electronics & Energy Storage, on 28 May in Den Bosch, the technology behind sustainable energy systems was central.\u00a0<\/strong>Watch the aftermovie of the event below. <\/strong><\/p>\r\n

<\/p>\r\n

Three hundred visitors visited the atmospheric Congrescentrum 1931 last Tuesday, where 29 exhibitors were eager to show their innovations. Visitors could choose from a track <\/em>around power electronics or energy storage that were indicated with colors. This setup was well received. The interactive demos were also well attended. Ten exhibitors organized live <\/em>demonstrations on the trade fair floor where visitors could try out and test products themselves.<\/p>\r\n

Are we ready?
<\/strong>Traditionally, the day was opened in the plenary hall where Bart de Vries from VONK gave a substantive lecture<\/a> provided on the relationship between power electronics and hydrogen. \u201cIt is a field of tension,\u201d says De Vries. \u201cOn the one hand, we all want to participate in the energy transition and hydrogen plays an essential role in this \u2013 certainly for industry. On the other hand, the demand for electricity is increasing so exponentially that we have to be careful that grid operators and electrolysers are ready for it and that the power supply remains affordable.\u201d<\/p>\r\n

High level
<\/strong>After this stimulating opening lecture, visitors could choose from no less than 23 substantive presentations where everything revolved around deepening professional knowledge. A common theme was network congestion. Various solutions for this social problem were reviewed. For example, Jeroen van Hapert spoke of \u00a0ExideTechnologies<\/a> about peak shaving<\/em><\/a> to prevent the grid from being overloaded during short-term peaks in power demand. Rutger Kersjes from the University of Twente specifically focused on the operation of the power distribution system<\/a> for an electric aircraft (the Pipistrel Velis). In the circuit configuration that makes electric flight possible, a major challenge is the controllability of the power transfer between the two DC-connected energy storage systems and the operation of the engine. An appealing topic that captivated the audience until the last second.<\/p>\r\n

Green batteries
<\/strong>No\u00ebl Steentjes closed the event on behalf of Bredenoord with an overview lecture<\/a> where he convinced his audience of the great importance of green batteries for sustainability within the energy sector. Steentjes remained realistic. \u201cIt is not for nothing that we speak of a transition. In the short term, I see mainly salvation in hybrid applications; a mix of different alternative fuels with\u00a0energy storage<\/em>-solutions,\u201d said the engineer.<\/p>\r\n
