Nokia today announced that it will partner with MCS to deploy private wireless connectivity, networking equipment and analytics to The Ocean Cleanup, the international non-profit project developing and scaling technologies to rid the oceans of plastic.<\/p>\r\n

This collaboration is in line with Nokia's enhanced environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategy and fits seamlessly with its goal of advancing the role of technology in combating climate change and minimizing environmental impact.<\/p>\r\n

Reducing environmental pressure through digitalization and connectivity<\/h2>\r\n

Nokia focuses on the role its products play in solving some of the world's most pressing challenges.<\/p>\r\n

They do this by using connectivity and digitalization to restore stalled productivity, but also by providing inclusive access to opportunities and alleviating pressure on the environment and natural ecosystems. According to UNESCO, plastic waste accounts for 80% of all marine pollution and an estimated 8 to 10 million tons of plastic end up in the ocean every year.<\/p>\r\n

Nokia Digital Automation Cloud for The Ocean Cleanup in Pacific Ocean<\/h2>\r\n

MCS is Nokia's partner for the distribution of Nokia Digital Automation Cloud (DAC) in the Benelux. Together with Nokia they have successfully deployed the first private LTE (4G) wireless solution from Nokia DAC for The Ocean Cleanup activities in the North Pacific Ocean. More systems will be deployed at a later stage.<\/p>\r\n

High-end video connectivity with 4G for better navigation<\/h3>\r\n

Nokia DAC is a high-performance, end-to-end private LTE (4G) wireless network and edge computing platform. The LTE connectivity, Nokia MX Industrial Edge (MXIE) and analytics will be used for various applications.<\/p>\r\n

An example of this is high-end video connectivity via 4G technology. This supports The Ocean Cleanup\u2019s work with navigation during the collection of plastic in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.<\/p>\r\n

Technology for sustainability and nature conservation<\/h2>\r\n

5G, private wireless networks, edge computing, sensors, AI-based analytics, drones. These and other advanced technologies will play an increasingly crucial role in supporting the conservation and sustainability of our natural environment.<\/p>\r\n

This is because these technologies provide direct, continuous, up-to-date information on the status of the environment, both on land and at sea. The partnership with The Ocean Cleanup offers the opportunity to explore this role further.<\/p>\r\n

About The Ocean Cleanup<\/h4>\r\n

The Ocean Cleanup is an international non-profit project that develops and scales up technologies to rid the world's oceans of plastic. They want to achieve this goal through a two-pronged approach: damming the inflow via rivers and cleaning up what has already accumulated in the ocean.<\/p>\r\n

For the latter, The Ocean Cleanup is developing large-scale systems to efficiently concentrate and periodically remove the plastic. This plastic is tracked and traced via DNV\u2019s chain of custody model to certify its origin when recycled into new products. To turn off the tap in rivers, The Ocean Cleanup has developed a portfolio of Interceptor\u2122 solutions to intercept and remove river plastic before it reaches the ocean.<\/p>\r\n

The Ocean Cleanup was founded in 2013 by Boyan Slat and now employs a broad multidisciplinary team of approximately 140 people. The foundation is based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.<\/p>\r\n
