The interlayer is typically polyvinyl butyral (PVB), ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA), or thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU).<\/p>\r\n<p>The plastic interlayer is sandwiched by the glass and heated to form the initial melting and eliminate air pockets and bubbles. Then these constructions are heated under pressure in an autoclave or oven to achieve the final bonded product (fully crosslinked in the case of the thermoset EVA).\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Laminated glass is used for vehicle windshields and windows for many reasons.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li><strong>Increased safety and security:<\/strong>\u00a0Laminated glass is harder to break. If it does break, the broken glass will stick to the plastic rather than shattering everywhere. It can be designed to withstand bullets and bomb blasts.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Sound Reduction:<\/strong>\u00a0The viscoelastic properties of the interlayer material considerably reduce sound transmission.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Solar Energy Control:<\/strong>\u00a0It reduces heat gain and controls glare.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>UV Control<\/strong>: UV-absorbing additives in the interlayer can screen out almost all damaging UV rays.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Weather\/Natural Disasters<\/strong>: Laminated glass can be designed to remain intact under impact and keep the envelope of the building sealed.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Durability<\/strong>: There will be no water\/moisture infiltration, and it maintains its color and strength over time.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Design Versatility<\/strong>: It can be flat or curved, wired, tinted, have designs printed on the interlayer, and\/or produced with reflective glasses<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>LUMINEQ display is 0.7mm thick, which can be perfectly embedded into a typical PVB layer of 0.76mm thickness. The image below shows the structure of a transparent display embedded in the laminated glass stack.<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nijkerk-ne.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/thinfilm-300x120.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"598\" height=\"239\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>The transparent display is available as a thin film deposited on top of a 0.7 mm glass substrate. This display layer will be placed inside the PVB layer of 0.76 mm thickness where a hole is cut for the display. LUMINEQ recommend using two layers of interlayer on either side of the display so that there is no glass on glass in the stack, along with a cut piece of interlayer that our display fits into. LUMINEQ uses the same ITO layers for patterning the conductive layers and for touch sensing. The touch screen technology is based on capacity function. The LUMINEQ in-cell touch technology has the following advantages.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>High transparency: There is no additional touch layer, so the transmission will not be compromised.<\/li>\r\n<li>The surface is glass and easy to clean. It is essential for touch applications.<\/li>\r\n<li>The touch function stays the same after the display is laminated in glass.<\/li>\r\n<li>Water de-sensitive: The LUMINEQ touch technology has been engineered to work even in the heaviest rain and in extreme temperatures.<\/li>\r\n<li>The touch works through the glass of 4mm thickness. Ari explained two different technologies in the webinar: PDLC Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal and SPD Suspended Particle Device.<\/p>\r\n<h3><strong>PDLC Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p>When inactive the liquid crystals are randomly arranged, thus scattering the light as it permeates the screen, which results in the translucent, milky appearance of the assembly. But when you apply a voltage, an electrical field is created between the two electrodes. It causes the liquid crystals to align, allowing light to pass through and essentially turning the screen transparent.<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nijkerk-ne.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/milkyappearance-300x196.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"752\" height=\"491\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>Image from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0038092X16001602\">ScienceDirect<\/a><\/p>\r\n<h3><strong>SPD Suspended Particle Device<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p>In a smart window, millions of these SPDs are placed between two panels of glass or plastic, which is coated with a transparent conductive material. When electricity comes into contact with the SPDs via the conductive coating, they line up in a straight line and allow light to flow through. Once the electricity is taken away, they move back into a random pattern and block light.<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nijkerk-ne.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/twoglasspane-300x241.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"607\" height=\"488\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>Image from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gauzy.com\/pdlc\/\">Gauzy<\/a><\/p>\r\n<p>LUMINEQ did a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lumineq.com\/applications\/customer-cases\/vision-systems-dimmable-window\">dimmable window demonstrator<\/a>\u00a0in a joint operation with one of our laminator partners using SPD.<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nijkerk-ne.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/dimmablewindow-300x157.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"314\" \/><\/p>\r\n<h2>Use cases<\/h2>\r\n<h3><strong>Transparent keypad for vehicle entry<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p>LUMINEQ introduced their new transparent keypad demo in May and raised lots of interest in the transportation industry. By integrating a transparent keypad lock into the glass window of a vehicle, vehicle manufacturers bring an unprecedented stylish keyless entry system to vehicles.<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nijkerk-ne.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/keyless-300x169.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"646\" height=\"364\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>Ari illustrated the benefits of a keypad entry in different scenarios. For instance, you can leave all your stuff including car keys and mobile phones to the car when you go swimming on the beach. It is a smart way to manage access to shared vehicles. Think about a construction site where facility managers can grant access to different operators remotely by providing codes that unlock the excavator.<\/p>\r\n<h3><strong>Vehicle dynamic tinting<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p>LUMINEQ transparent display can be used to control the dimming of the vehicle window or sunroof. This application has been used on the world&#039;s fastest\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lumineq.com\/blog\/lumineq-transparent-display-on-maglev-train\">maglev train<\/a>\u00a0debut in China in July. Passengers can manually adjust the amount of coming-through sunlight by pressing the lit-up buttons \u201c+\u201d or \u201c-\u201d on the window glass. The transparent displays are embedded in glass, as rugged as the four-layer glass itself. It is also possible to set up the touch display to adjust automatically according to the travel routes.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Customization<\/h2>\r\n<p>LUMINEQ provides stand-alone demonstrators for evaluation and prototyping purposes. When it comes to mass production, customers usually require custom displays tailoring to their specific design needs. LUMINEQ offers customization services.
