In 2006, the 'Industry Council on ESD Target Levels' was founded by 6 companies. The Industry Council on ESD Target Levels is an independent body of ESD experts with the mission to evaluate the ESD robustness requirements of modern ICs, allowing safe handling and mounting in an ESD protected area. The council decided to make recommendations based on data for the required ESD robustness of ICs, so that they could be used safely and without extreme requirements getting in the way of functionality. Naturally, this has a strong relationship with the methods of testing that robustness.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n

In his presentation, Theo Smedes from NXP Semiconductors provides an overview of developments over the past 15 years in the field of ESD Target Levels and ESD test standardization. Finally, he also looks ahead to expectations for the future.
<\/strong><\/p>\r\n

The council currently consists of approximately 60 companies. The current scope has been further expanded to make recommendations for the next generation 'qualification target levels' for the human body model (HBM) and the charged device model (CDM) (in accordance with the ESDA Technology Roadmap). This also takes into account the latest limitations of IC design and manufacturing.<\/p>\r\n

The council is also involved in defining methods to limit electrical overload (EOS) and makes recommendations for an 'efficient system level IEC ESD design' with realistic testing practices.<\/p>\r\n
