Last week, Vodafone was the first provider to go live with its 5G network. The 5G protocol runs alongside the 4G protocol. Vodafone uses existing 4G frequencies. This means it is not necessary to immediately build new transmission towers or antennas. Sharing the existing 4G spectrum creates an ideal situation to further develop the 5G network in the coming years. A multi-band auction will take place later this year in which three new frequency bands will be auctioned. The latency (response speed) in particular will be significantly improved with 5G.<\/p>\r\n

The implementation of 5G in the built environment will bring about a small technological revolution. The use of sensors in the 5G network will increase significantly. Initially, consider applications in smart cities and the integration of buildings in the 5G network. On a larger scale, 5G will help develop new technologies and IoT applications that help form Smart Cities. IoT devices can also connect to other buildings to communicate with each other. This provides a smart experience where someone can be connected anywhere and the environment adapts to the person.<\/p>\r\n

5G will enable enhanced mobile broadband services and create the potential for new value-added wireless services through a wide range of new use cases. This includes new applications in, among others, the automotive sector, production, energy & utilities and healthcare.<\/p>\r\n

It is important for building owners to prepare for the eventual full installation of 5G, as this technology comes with some complications. 5G operates on a higher frequency signal than 4G and as a result, 5G offers a smaller transmission area. Building owners should therefore think about supporting buildings with 5G coverage throughout the city, and how mobile coverage can be offered to tenants in buildings. Modern buildings are built of materials that are difficult to penetrate, making them Faraday cages, so nothing can get in or out.<\/p>\r\n

5G is expected to accelerate the digitalization of the built environment even further. Technology makes it possible, but added value is created when people see, understand and use the possibilities.<\/p>\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\r\n\t
