It was not written with legislation in mind, but engineering. That is precisely why it has become the most relevant technical reference for the implementation of the\u00a0<strong>EU<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Cyber Resilience Act (CRA)<\/strong>\u00a0in industrial embedded systems.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CRA defines\u00a0<em>what<\/em>\u00a0manufacturers are legally required to achieve for products with digital elements, but it deliberately avoids prescribing\u00a0<em>how<\/em>\u00a0those requirements must be implemented. This gap between legal obligation and technical execution is where harmonized standards come into play. The\u00a0<strong>EN IEC 62443 series<\/strong>\u00a0is currently being harmonized under the CRA, meaning that compliance with this standard provides a presumption of conformity with the regulation. In practice, this makes IEC 62443 the most concrete engineering-level interpretation of CRA requirements for industrial products.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rather than treating the CRA as a separate compliance exercise, IEC 62443 allows teams to anchor CRA readiness directly in system architecture, software design, and development workflows.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-7940-1\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-7940-1-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell panel-grid-cell-empty\" ><\/div><div id=\"pgc-7940-1-1\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell panel-grid-cell-mobile-last\" ><div id=\"panel-7940-1-1-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child\" data-index=\"2\" ><div class=\"panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-7940-1-1-0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why the 7 Foundational Requirements Matter<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within IEC 62443, the\u00a0<strong>seven Foundational Requirements (FRs)<\/strong>\u00a0define the core security properties that an embedded system must uphold. They are not features, controls, or checklists, but categories of technical responsibility that shape how a system is designed and validated:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li>Identification and authentication of users, devices, and services<\/li>\n<li>Control over authorized actions<\/li>\n<li>Protection of system integrity<\/li>\n<li>Confidentiality of data at rest and in transit<\/li>\n<li>Controlled and segmented data flows<\/li>\n<li>Detection and handling of security-relevant events<\/li>\n<li>Availability of system resources under adverse conditions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taken together, these requirements form a coherent model for \u201csecurity by design\u201d, exactly the principle enforced by the CRA. Importantly, they also map directly to CRA obligations such as vulnerability prevention, impact limitation, incident handling, and lifecycle risk management, a relationship that is made explicit in documents like\u00a0<em>Cyber Resilience Act Requirements \u2013 Standards Mapping<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From Requirements to Implementation<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For embedded teams, the challenge is not understanding these requirements conceptually, but translating them into\u00a0<strong>verifiable technical measures<\/strong>\u00a0within constrained systems and complex supply chains. This is where tooling becomes relevant, not as a compliance shortcut, but as a means to maintain continuous control over these foundational properties throughout development and operation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Technologies from developers such as\u00a0<strong>Exein<\/strong>\u00a0operate precisely at this intersection.
