Suppresses conducted EMI (noise on the mains)<\/h2>\r\n<p>Switch-mode AC-DC power supplies generate high-frequency switching noise (from tens of kHz up into MHz). This noise can travel back onto the AC mains.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Common-mode noise: The same noise voltage appears on both Line and Neutral with respect to earth<\/li>\r\n<li>Without filtering, this noise:<br \/>o Interferes with nearby equipment<br \/>o Causes radio\/communication interference<br \/>o Fails EMC standards (CISPR, FCC, EN55032, etc.)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>A common-mode choke presents high impedance to common-mode noise, strongly attenuating it.<\/p>\r\n<h2 class=\"h3\">2. Passes normal AC power with minimal loss<\/h2>\r\n<p>The key advantage of a common-mode filter:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Normal AC current flows in opposite directions in Line and Neutral<\/li>\r\n<li>Magnetic fields cancel \u2192 very low impedance to 50\/60 Hz power<\/li>\r\n<li>Minimal voltage drop and power loss<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>So:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>\u2714 Filters noise<\/li>\r\n<li>\u2714 Does not affect power delivery<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2 class=\"h3\">3. Works with Y-capacitors to reduce EMI<\/h2>\r\n<p>In a typical AC-DC input filter:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Common-mode choke blocks common-mode noise<\/li>\r\n<li>Y-capacitors provide a return path for common-mode noise to earth<\/li>\r\n<li>Together, they form an effective EMI suppression network<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>Without the choke, Y-capacitors alone would:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Be less effective<\/li>\r\n<li>Increase leakage current beyond safety limits<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-43074\"
