The mission&#039;s goal is to make space research more accessible by developing a low-cost re-entry CubeSat platform capable of returning scientific payloads and experimental samples back to Earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-34900_ba7eaf-e5\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"kt-adv-heading34900_935913-ec wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\" data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading34900_935913-ec\">Today, returning material from space is a complex and expensive process, often dependent on missions to the International Space Station. With Aether: T-ReX, the team aims to demonstrate a new pathway: using the CubeSat standard as a compact and affordable platform for re-entry missions. The current mission is the first iteration of this concept \u2013 a 3U CubeSat-based demonstrator designed to survive suborbital flight and atmospheric re-entry after being launched aboard a REXUS sounding rocket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-34900_1e55d7-6d\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"kt-adv-heading34900_4c051a-ce wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\" data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading34900_4c051a-ce\">The Aetherspace team currently consists of 8 full-time student members, more than 10 part-time contributors, 2 PhD researchers, 2 coaches, and a growing network of alumni. Beyond engineering, the project also focuses heavily on education, outreach, and interdisciplinary innovation by combining aerospace engineering, embedded electronics, software development, systems engineering, and project management within a student-driven environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-34900_6032a9-b6\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"kt-adv-heading34900_609dd2-01 wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\" data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading34900_609dd2-01\">The team has been supported throughout the development process by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurocircuits.com\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">Eurocircuits<\/a>, whose PCB manufacturing services are used across nearly every subsystem of the mission \u2014 from power electronics and communication systems to RF boards and camera interfaces. As the project enters its integration and testing phase, reliable PCB production has become increasingly critical for ensuring mission success under the extreme environmental conditions of launch and re-entry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-34900_eda2fd-02\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"kt-adv-heading34900_203be1-33 wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\" data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading34900_203be1-33\">The Aether: T-ReX mission<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-34900_c7afe5-ea\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"kt-adv-heading34900_056d81-0e wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\" data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading34900_056d81-0e\">The Aether: T-ReX mission consists of two major elements: a Rocket Mounted Unit (RMU) that remains attached to the rocket and a Free Falling Unit (FFU), which acts as the actual re-entry CubeSat demonstrator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-34900_129bb2-74\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"kt-adv-heading34900_db4e0b-a6 wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\" data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading34900_db4e0b-a6\">During the mission, the REXUS rocket will carry the experiment to an altitude of approximately 80-90 km. At a predefined point in the flight timeline, the RMU deploys the FFU from the rocket nose cone using a custom deployment system inspired by CubeSat P-Pod mechanisms. After ejection, the FFU begins an autonomous free-fall trajectory back toward Earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-34900_a9a425-8b\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-kadence-image kb-image34900_e7397a-a9 size-medium_large\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-34900_278518-65\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"kt-adv-heading34900_40f939-4d wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\" data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading34900_40f939-4d\">One of the mission&#039;s most important technological demonstrations is the inflatable heat shield system. Shortly after deployment, a dedicated Inflation System activates cool gas generators that inflate a torus structure around the vehicle. This structure deploys and stabilizes the heat shield, which protects the CubeSat during atmospheric descent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-34900_4ceeff-73\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"kt-adv-heading34900_95942d-b1 wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\" data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading34900_95942d-b1\">The mission is designed to gather extensive flight data during all phases of the trajectory. The team measures:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-34900_519677-6b\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Heat shield temperatures using embedded thermocouples.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pressure at the stagnation point.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ambient atmospheric pressure and temperature.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vehicle acceleration and spin behavior.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>GNSS position and trajectory data.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Internal torus pressure during inflation and descent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-34900_f2aa8a-34\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"kt-adv-heading34900_84fb29-80 wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\" data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading34900_84fb29-80\">The collected data will allow the team to compare real-world flight behavior with simulations and validate whether the heat shield system can reliably protect a CubeSat-scale re-entry platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-34900_380ee8-01\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"kt-adv-heading34900_6073db-65 wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\" data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading34900_6073db-65\">Subsystem architecture<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-34900_50f7de-93\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"kt-adv-heading34900_b31a84-00 wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\" data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading34900_b31a84-00\">The Aether: T-ReX CubeSat follows a highly modular subsystem architecture. Every major subsystem has its own custom PCB following the PC104 CubeSat stacking standard. All subsystems communicate through a CAN bus routed over the PC104 connector stack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-34900_2a35f1-3b\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"kt-adv-heading34900_3445d8-bc wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\" data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading34900_3445d8-bc\">The platform uses multiple STM32L4 microcontrollers, with each subsystem operating its own independent controller for maximum modularity and fault isolation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-34900_7cb3a8-13\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"kt-adv-heading34900_9f5652-69 wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\" data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading34900_9f5652-69\">The major subsystems onboard the FFU include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-34900_14e73f-81\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Electrical Power System (EPS)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On-Board Computer (OBC)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SATCOM and GNSS system<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inflation System (IFS)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Camera System<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>UHF communications subsystem (UHFCOM)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-34900_d7f064-b1\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"kt-adv-heading34900_70acc4-df wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\" data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading34900_70acc4-df\">The system architecture was designed around reliability and redundancy. Multiple redundant power converters are used throughout the platform, and individual subsystem power rails can be enabled or disabled independently by the EPS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-34900_a68c60-84\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"kt-adv-heading34900_cc1271-a0 wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\" data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading34900_cc1271-a0\">Electrical Power System<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-34900_27ee70-24\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"kt-adv-heading34900_3b7833-b4 wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\" data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading34900_3b7833-b4\">The Electrical Power System acts as the central power distribution unit of the CubeSat. The EPS uses a LiFePO4 battery architecture combined with redundant 5V and 3.3V power converters to improve reliability during flight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-34900_b5f733-30\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"kt-adv-heading34900_eb4916-b8 wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\" data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading34900_eb4916-b8\">Each subsystem receives its own dedicated power rail through the PC104 stack. The EPS also integrates battery monitoring and protection circuitry capable of tracking voltage, current consumption, and battery temperature throughout the mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-34900_1c37eb-0d\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"kt-adv-heading34900_7fcf55-c8 wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\" data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading34900_7fcf55-c8\">Designing the EPS presented significant thermal and mechanical challenges. Due to the low-pressure environment at high altitude, convective cooling becomes extremely limited, requiring careful optimization of converter efficiency and power dissipation. At the same time, the system must withstand launch loads of up to 20 g while operating reliably inside the spinning rocket environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-34900_f41e5f-8b\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-kadence-image kb-image34900_ea6915-9f size-medium_large\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-34900_7cc44c-32\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"kt-adv-heading34900_06fc41-5a wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\" data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading34900_06fc41-5a\">Inflation System<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-34900_42372d-dd\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"kt-adv-heading34900_aedec7-48 wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\" data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading34900_aedec7-48\">The Inflation System (IFS) is one of the mission&#039;s most critical subsystems, as it is responsible for deploying the inflatable heat shield after the Free Falling Unit is ejected from the rocket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-34900_37d265-e8\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"kt-adv-heading34900_467e5e-58 wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\" data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading34900_467e5e-58\">Using dedicated cool gas generators, the system inflates a torus structure that deploys and stabilizes the heat shield during descent. The subsystem also monitors torus pressure, controls the parachute burn wires, and logs acceleration data throughout the flight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-34900_dafb85-42\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"kt-adv-heading34900_1b2f6d-18 wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\" data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading34900_1b2f6d-18\">The IFS uses its own STM32L476RTG6 microcontroller and communicates with the rest of the CubeSat through the CAN-based PC104 architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-34900_d4bddd-ce\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"kt-adv-heading34900_1fa623-c3 wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\" data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading34900_1fa623-c3\">Because the subsystem controls irreversible flight events and high-current actuators, reliability was a key design focus. The electronics must remain operational under strong vibration, low-pressure conditions, high temperatures, and the rocket&#039;s 4 Hz spin during ascent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-34900_19497f-3d\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-kadence-image kb-image34900_d5297e-8b size-medium_large\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-34900_f6bf58-66\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"kt-adv-heading34900_6e3581-53 wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\" data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading34900_6e3581-53\">On-Board Computer and SATCOM subsystem<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-34900_022117-ab\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"kt-adv-heading34900_4847d9-73 wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\" data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading34900_4847d9-73\">The On-Board Computer is responsible for collecting telemetry from every subsystem and coordinating mission operations throughout the flight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-34900_629c7a-c7\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"kt-adv-heading34900_96d387-46 wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\" data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading34900_96d387-46\">The OBC interfaces with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-34900_cf1811-cc\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The CAN bus backbone.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A Septentrio GNSS receiver.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An Iridium satellite modem.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Multiple SD card storage systems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-34900_4cc455-9d\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"kt-adv-heading34900_46a88a-85 wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\" data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading34900_46a88a-85\">To improve robustness and reduce software overhead, the team implemented direct sector-based SD card writing without a traditional filesystem for mission-critical telemetry storage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-spacer aligncenter kt-block-spacer-34900_2c867c-b4\"><div class=\"kt-block-spacer kt-block-spacer-halign-center\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"kt-adv-heading34900_518add-11 wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\" data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading34900_518add-11\">The software stack is built around FreeRTOS and written entirely in C.
