Anti-drone weapons were deployed. Governments pledged hundreds of millions in countermeasures. And in most cases, nobody could definitively explain where the drones came from or why they ended up there.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>These incidents highlight a fundamental shift in modern defense: neutralizing drones is no longer about deploying expensive missiles, but about using electronic warfare, including GPS jamming, spoofing, and EMP disruptions. Spoofing is particularly dangerous, feeding falsified position data to force an aircraft off-course without triggering an immediate alert. As electronic countermeasures become the primary weapon to bring drones down (a reality already clearly demonstrated in conflicts like Ukraine) defending the drone&#039;s internal systems and data integrity against these disruptions has become a crucial success factor.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>This is not a hardware problem. It is an embedded software problem. And it is one that development teams can solve.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-8500-1\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-8500-1-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-8500-1-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"2\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t><h3 class=\"widget-title\">A problem close to home<\/h3>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" data-start=\"230\" data-end=\"679\">The incidents across the <strong data-start=\"255\" data-end=\"266\">Benelux<\/strong> paint a clear picture. In Belgium, drones were spotted above <strong data-start=\"328\" data-end=\"346\">military bases<\/strong> including Kleine-Brogel, Florennes, Leopoldsburg and Schaffen. Flight operations at <strong data-start=\"431\" data-end=\"451\">Brussels Airport<\/strong> were suspended following drone sightings. A drone was observed above the <strong data-start=\"525\" data-end=\"552\">nuclear research center<\/strong> in Mol. In the Netherlands, <strong data-start=\"581\" data-end=\"602\">military airbases<\/strong> including Eindhoven and Volkel were targeted by unidentified drone activity.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"684\" data-end=\"979\">An unmanned aircraft crashed on a school playground in Mechelen. What was clear is that the aircraft had ended up far outside its intended or permitted <strong data-start=\"836\" data-end=\"852\">flight zones<\/strong>. <strong data-start=\"854\" data-end=\"874\">GPS interference<\/strong>, in the form of <strong data-start=\"891\" data-end=\"902\">jamming<\/strong> or <strong data-start=\"906\" data-end=\"918\">spoofing<\/strong>, is one of the key mechanisms that can cause this to happen.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-8500-2\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-8500-2-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-8500-2-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"3\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t><h3 class=\"widget-title\">A pattern that cannot be ignored<\/h3>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p data-start=\"151\" data-end=\"614\">The Benelux incidents do not stand alone. <strong data-start=\"193\" data-end=\"215\">Spoofing incidents<\/strong> increased by <strong data-start=\"229\" data-end=\"237\">500%<\/strong> in 2024, driven in large part by the proliferation of modern drone warfare in Eastern Europe and the Middle East. According to <strong data-start=\"365\" data-end=\"373\">IATA<\/strong> data, <strong data-start=\"380\" data-end=\"406\">GPS signal loss events<\/strong> increased by <strong data-start=\"420\" data-end=\"428\">220%<\/strong> between 2021 and 2024. <strong data-start=\"452\" data-end=\"462\">Poland<\/strong> alone reported <strong data-start=\"478\" data-end=\"509\">2,732 GPS jamming incidents<\/strong> in January 2025. Around <strong data-start=\"534\" data-end=\"557\">900 flights per day<\/strong> are currently affected by <strong data-start=\"584\" data-end=\"604\">GPS interference<\/strong> globally.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"616\" data-end=\"849\">These are not numbers from a distant conflict zone. It is becoming one of the more active players in it <strong data-start=\"342\" data-end=\"363\">drone development<\/strong> itself. The government recently confirmed it will supply drones to Ukraine as part of <strong data-start=\"450\" data-end=\"465\">NATO policy<\/strong>, a decision that puts <strong data-start=\"488\" data-end=\"511\">Dutch-built systems<\/strong> directly into one of the most electronically contested airspaces on the planet. That is precisely the environment where <strong data-start=\"632\" data-end=\"643\">jamming<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"648\" data-end=\"660\">spoofing<\/strong> are already routine, and where a single <strong data-start=\"701\" data-end=\"725\">corrupted data write<\/strong> can be the difference between a mission completed and an aircraft lost.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"799\" data-end=\"1225\">Dutch and European manufacturers, from established industrial players such as <strong data-start=\"877\" data-end=\"884\">VDL<\/strong> to newer aerospace ventures like <strong data-start=\"918\" data-end=\"930\">Destinus<\/strong>, are shaping this next generation of drone platforms. Jamming simply denies access to <strong data-start=\"388\" data-end=\"403\">GPS signals<\/strong>, while spoofing actively manipulates the navigation system, causing a UAV to fly off-course, crash, or land in unauthorized locations.
