With the integration of renewables in utility power grids the industry needs to look at the future with a very different perspective. As the share of renewables on power grids increases, electric utilities must respond to the challenge of balancing large shares of variable renewables, in order to maintain grid balance and stability. Utilities need to manage an increasingly variable load of intermittent renewable energy sources and commercial customers require more reliable electricity supplies to mitigate outages. A fundamental rethinking of how energy systems need to be designed, and operated is needed.
