The EU Commission (in the shape of DG GROW) seems to be gearing up for a major update of its sustainability requirements. In February, a first stakeholder consultation meeting sought input as to whether two regulations affecting laboratory fridges and freezers should be up-graded. The regulations under discussion are: Commission Regulation (EU) 2015/1095 (ecodesign of professional refrigeration products) and Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2015/1094 (energy labelling of professional refrigerated storage cabinets).
The regulations set minimum energy efficiency and information requirements for the placing of such products on the market. The suggestion is that as part of their regular review cycle, the opportunity should be taken to implement higher ecodesign limits and energy label class limits.
A steering group will be formed to prepare an interim report for the commission upon which a decision will be based as to whether or not to go ahead with revising the existing regulations. This document is to be ready by this September and another stakeholder meeting will be held in October to discuss its contents. A final decision is due by the commission by end of April 2022.
