By using Condition Monitoring systems, companies can reduce the risk and costs associated with unforeseen breakdowns to critical production equipment and machinery.
Although the cost of a machine component such as a bearing, pump or motor is very small compared to the total cost of the machinery, the cost of production downtime and any consequential losses as a result of the component failure, are often significant.
One example of a custom monitoring system, developed by National Oilwell Varco, uses a new and patent applied method for detecting and localizing valve leaks in reciprocating mud pumps. These pumps are critical during the drilling process. The detection method is based on the observed fact that a leak flow through a closed defective valve generates strong and high frequency vibrations in the fluid module housing the valve. During the presentation we will highlight the challenges during the project, the implementation and the advantages of the leak detection system.
