Natural Bionano Coating for Medical Devices in a Firm Business Case

The highly promising company LipoCoat, from Eastern Netherland’s city of Enschede won the second edition of the MicroNano Start-Up of the Year contest. At the closure of the two day International MicroNano Conference in Amsterdam LipoCoat’s Director of Business Development, Raoul Oostenbrink was celebrated. Ronny van ’t Oever, president of the organising MinacNed association handed over the award. The jury of seven experts from a number of countries characterized the winning pitch with the words “A Firm Business Case, Good Market Chances and Solving a Problem of Today”.

’Bio-inspired coating’ is the technology LipoCoat will commercialize. The new technology gives resistance against biological fouling of proteins, cells and micro-organisms. This kind of fouling brings a lot of problems in health care causing inflammation. The coating technology can be applied broadly in the domain of biomaterials and medical devices. LipoCoat is focussing on applications like catheters in human healthcare.

startup-of-the-year-2016-lipocoatA number of eighteen preselected candidates got the opportunity to give a pitch at the entrepreneurship session of the science/industry meeting place of the International MicroNano Conference, December 13 and 14 December at the historic ‘Beurs van Berlage’ building in the heart of Amsterdam city.  According to the jury, the two runners-up were almost as good as the winner. Eyesiu Medicines from Leiden was a close second and the Delft based DENSsolutions came narrowly behind as a third.

A drug delivery solution based on lipids should bring a market breakthrough for Eyesiu. The technology will make the treatment of inflammation of the eye, the ear or skin far more relaxed for the patient together with a serious reduction of costs at the same time. DENSsolutions already is in the market place with products and systems that enable in situ application of TEM electron microscopy in the nanolab as never before. The whole field of expertise will benefit from this, both science and industry.
