DC distribution in Future Smart Homes: Opportunities and Challenges

Residential energy sector is undergoing a significant transformation due to increasing penetration of renewable energy sources (RESs), rise of electronic devices and addition of high power stochastic loads like electric vehicles (EVs). To further increase PV power utilization, battery storage systems are added to store PV energy for later use.  With this radical change in residential customer behaviour and increasingly DC based electrical systems, the capability of current AC –based residential distribution system has been called into question. DC based distribution offer improvements over current AC systems in terms of cost, simplicity and efficiency. This research proposes a two voltage bus dc distribution for residential houses: a 350 V power ring and a 48 V power ring . The opportunities and challenges of this system will be discussed in this presentation.
