The higher participation of solar and wind poses new challenges for the power systems. In order to ensure the stability and reliability of the electrical network, distribution system operators are forced to find ways to control bi-directional power flows and identify new methods to provide ancillary services to support the main electricity grid by making use of the flexibility provided by power electronic devices. This presentation presents some state-of-the-art methods that are used for this purpose and introduces the potential for finding new solutions.
