Over the previous decade, the industry of photovoltaic panels and converters expanded considerably. The demand for cheaper, smaller and more efficient inverters was driving increased research in this area. Available inverter topologies for photovoltaic application were improved and many new topologies proposed. The presentation will attempt to systematically address the key problems and grid requirements specific to photovoltaic systems (PV). Impact of these requirements on design of inverters for PV will be analysed with an overview of commercially available inverters and control strategies to complement the discussion. The third part of the discussion will address current research in this area.
