The thermal stress and lifetime of power switches in an electric drive are largely determined by the thermal cycling caused by the motion profile. In this presentation a dynamic gate driving strategy is presented which compensates the switch power losses for a complete motion profile, which reduces the junction temperature swings. An active gate driver that supplies an adjustable gate voltage is prototyped and demonstrates significant lifetime improvement of power converters.
