The Onze Lieve Vrouwe Gasthuis (OLVG) is the only large top clinical hospital in Amsterdam that is literally and figuratively in the middle of the hectic capital life. The hospital combines top clinical patient care with a high degree of hospitality; the patient is central. The basic principles are integrity and respect for people. Leading and innovative are key words in business operations.

Almost all major specializations are represented at the OLVG. Every year, more than 290,000 people visit the outpatient clinic, approximately 27,000 people are treated in day care and approximately 26,000 admissions take place.

The hospital has a number of special functions:

  • a Heart Center with Cardio-thoracic Surgery and Interventional Cardiology
  • an HIV treatment center
  • a Level III Intensive Care Unit with 24 beds
  • an Emergency Department with approximately 48,000 visitors annually
  • a specialized Orthopedic department for spine surgery, among other things.

The OLVG has administratively merged with it Sint Lucas Andreas Hospital The aim of the collaboration is higher quality and a more efficient organization of healthcare. The merger enables further specialization, especially where complexity is high and volumes are low. The hospitals maintain their full range of basic care and continue to receive all patients.

The OLVG is a training hospital with a wide range of specialist medical, paramedical and nursing training courses and initiates applied patient-related scientific research. To further expand cooperation in these areas, the OLVG and the AMC have entered into an agreement. The OLVG has been given the exclusive status of Teaching Hospital.

The OLVG is one of the 26 top clinical hospitals that work together in the Association of Collaborating Top Clinical Training Hospitals (STZ). In addition, OLVG forms the partnership together with 5 other STZ hospitals Santeon

The OLVG has a decentralized management model with 26 units responsible for results. The unit model provides substance to the integration of the medical specialist into the hospital company, a business-oriented and more output-oriented way of managing the hospital. The primary process and medical services to patients are central. The units are responsible, within the established frameworks, for daily decisions and the implementation of strategy and policy. A distinction is made between primary business units and medically supported units. In each unit, a medical specialist fulfills the role of unit chairman, supported by a manager. In addition to the business units, the organization has a Teaching Hospital directorate, a Services directorate and a number of supporting staff departments.

The OLVG has an admission capacity of 555 recognized beds and employs approximately 3,000 employees, of whom an average of 200 are medical specialists. The OLVG is located in Amsterdam with locations in the East, Center, South and IJburg districts. The center, the eastern part of the city, IJburg and Diemen form the 'home market' for basic care. For top clinical care, the OLVG focuses on a broader catchment area. For third-line referrals to centers of excellence, the service area extends throughout the Netherlands.
