Academic Medical Centre

The Academic Medical Center (AMC) is one of eight university medical centers in our country and is considered one of the international top in the field of academic medicine.

As a university medical center, the AMC has three main tasks. The treatment of patients comes first. In addition, a lot of medical-scientific research is conducted at the AMC. The third main task is to provide medical education.

The AMC was founded in 1983. At that time, two hospitals in the city center of Amsterdam, the Wilhelmina Gasthuis and the Binnengasthuis, came under one roof with the medical faculty of the University of Amsterdam. This made the AMC the first Dutch university medical center. In 1988, the Emma Children's Hospital also became part of the new university hospital.

In addition to the hospital departments and faculty departments, the current AMC houses the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience (an Academy institution), the medical department of the Royal Tropical Institute and the Academic Psychiatric Center. The area around the main buildings accommodates an increasing number of 'spin-offs': small research companies that emerged from the AMC, such as Arthrogen and uniQure.

In addition, independent medical-scientific institutions are established there, including the internationally operating IATEC Clinical Trial Services, PharmAccess and the Spinoza Center for Neuroimaging.

In collaboration with the municipality of Amsterdam, the AMC stimulates the development of a Medical Business Park: innovative companies and research institutes in the field of healthcare, bio-sciences and life-sciences.

In September 2011, the AMC announced its intention to collaborate more intensively with the VUmc. They investigate the possibilities of one Academic Medical Alliance Amsterdam.

The AMC is part of the Dutch Federation of University Medical Centers (NFU).
