How a well-thought-out PCBA design can pay off financially and boost your reputation

Nobody wants to market an electronic product that does not meet the end user's needs. This will cause irritation, extra costs and in the worst case, reputational damage.

So to make sure that what you produce actually functions as intended, you will need to properly check, verify and test it before shipping it to the end user.

To set this up cost-efficiently, an electrical test of the PCBA (Printed Circuit Board Assembly) is necessary at the end of the assembly. An additional functional test of the complete end product may then be desirable. This testing is done, for example, using a functional PCBA test system.

Now you can get a DUT (Device Under Test) for each product dedicated test system (have) developed and built, but you can also think of a universal and modular test system that is able to test all your products. Now and in the future. The choice of this often depends on the type of product, where and how it is used and deployed and how many products you make and sell. Your product must also meet certain safety requirements.

In the presentation, Van Oostrom will discuss the various options, the operation and the structure of a good and reliable test system.

Test tooling
For a good test you first need access to the DUT to be able to measure everything properly and reliably. The design of the PCBA is very important here. It is impossible to test a DUT properly if you cannot reach it with your measuring equipment or programmer. Therefore, the speaker discusses the importance of DFT (Design For Test).

He explains which important aspects you should take into account in your design and, above all, why.

All aspects that are important in making choices are discussed in the presentation. Van Oostrom also discusses possible pitfalls during the development of a test system and the associated test tooling.
