Mechanical engineering, and by extension the entire technical sector, is struggling with a shortage of personnel. Instead of looking harder for people who are no longer there, companies need to work smarter and make better use of existing technology and automation. However, many companies continue to hold on to old methods, which limits their efficiency. “We have always done it this way” is something you sometimes hear…
For years, advanced tools have been available to standardize and automate processes, such as configurators that generate schematics, PLC code and documentation. Companies that have embraced this technology are leading the way, while others struggle with where to start and encounter resistance from their own staff. This staffing challenge will ensure that servitization will only increase further and faster if we want to keep our manufacturing industry relevant and local. Companies will have to focus on their core activities and outsource sub-processes to specialized parties, allowing us to move from a make-to-order to an assemble-to-order story. Specialized parties have an economy of scale, allowing them to set up production processes that would be unthinkable in a small department of a large organization.
Servitization will increase efficiency, reduce lead times, save costs and reduce the need for in-house, technically trained personnel and inventory.
