In 2024, an iconic 18-storey building was modernised with state-of-the-art SAUTER systems to improve sustainability and flexibility. The renovation, with the smart actuator system, improved the level of comfort and energy consumption, aligned with the owner's sustainability goals.

52Nijmegen is not a typical tall office building. This building is an iconic monument of the city of Nijmegen. It is named after its location and the latitude at which it stands, has 18 floors and is 86 meters high. What makes it remarkable, however, is the 10-degree bend in the facade.

The tower was originally planned by NXP Semiconductors, the former semiconductor division of Philips, as a center for knowledge and innovation. It has since become a multi-tenant building with more than 25,000 m2 rentable floor space consisting of laboratories, offices, meeting rooms, a bar and a restaurant. In 2017, the building was purchased by Kadans Science Partner, which already owns three adjacent buildings on the Novio Tech Campus, a high-tech and health hotspot.

The solution

When the building was completed in 2008, 52Nijmegen was already equipped with a SAUTER installation. In 2024, renovation work began to modernize the building with advanced technology. The renovation work is being carried out by ReMe Technology, a Dutch specialist in the field of control technology and building management that has had a good relationship with SAUTER Nederland since its foundation in 2007.

After many years of faithful service, the originally installed room controllers of an earlier generation of the SAUTER ecos room automation system and various air damper actuators had to be replaced. The replacement should enable flexible and varied use of the building and at the same time meet new sustainability requirements that are being implemented in several phases.

SAUTER Netherlands presented the smart actuator for ball valves in combination with a clampable flow meter. A new SAUTER ecos forms the centre of the modular room automation on each floor with the central floor manager functions. The communication via BACnet ensures that all room functions are integrated into the building management system implemented by ReMe Techniek.

Application: 6-way control valve for the climate ceiling, arrangement per zone: smart actuator, flow sensor, I/O module as extension, ecos floor manager

The flow meter and smart actuator combination was extensively tested on site and after approval by the building owner, 738 sets were installed. Thanks to the pluggable cabling with pre-assembled cables of the smart actuator system, the installation took only one week per floor, without interrupting the business activities in the building. The SAUTER smart actuator solution The 6-way control valves were so successful that the smart actuator version was also immediately chosen for the approximately 100 air valve actuators to be replaced.

The result

ReMe Technology and SAUTER Nederland can look back on a successful project. The smart actuator system proved to be extremely suitable for the renovation and modernization of the building. Few construction measures, such as cutting and breaking, were required. In a building where tenants are present, this is a huge advantage.

The combination of the smart actuator for single room control and the SAUTER automation system ecos offers an expandable solution and therefore a secure investment. This makes it ideal for both new and existing buildings. Furthermore, the SAUTER solution supports the sustainability plans of the owners of 52Nijmegen by offering the highest level of comfort and optimum energy savings. This means that the technology at field level is equipped for further sustainability measures in the coming years. It also makes it possible to expand the automation of rooms with smart sensors. The smart actuator system thus offers a great deal of flexibility for the building, its owners and users.
