For hybrid and electric vehicles, the safe control voltage of 12, 24 or 48Vdc is often transformed from the high-voltage battery. That is much more efficient than using an alternator and a separate battery system just for this control voltage.
But this requires a DC/DC converter that can guarantee safety and is approved for that application.
