The chemical industry on its way to electrification

One of the plenary speakers during the Energy in Industry event is Kiki Crombag. On behalf of SABIC she gives a presentation on Sustainability and Electrification. Kiki, Senior Manager Corporate Sustainability, is concerned with positioning SABIC within global sustainability trends. She sits at the table with a very extensive group, from provinces to the World Economic Forum, where she keeps an eye on the interests of the petrochemical industry.

SABIC, Saudi Basic Industries Corporation, is active in petrochemicals, chemicals, industrial polymers and fertilizers. SABIC is one of the largest chemical companies in the world.

Steam crackers play a central role in the production of basic chemicals and require a significant amount of energy to break down hydrocarbons into olefins and aromatics. Typically the reaction is carried out in ovens at temperatures of about 850 degrees Celsius. Until now, these temperatures have been achieved using conventional fuels. The demonstration stove that SABIC recently built together with partners BASF and Linde shows that continuous olefin production is possible using electricity as a heat source. By using electricity from renewable sources, the new technology has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions from one of the most energy-intensive production processes in the chemical industry by at least 90 percent compared to current technologies.
