The need for training as a system architect: registration for the 2023/2024 academic year open with a discount for FHI members

A newly constructed building or an existing building can only be called future-proof and sustainable if the correct building automation has been applied. But both within companies and with external parties, it can be difficult to make complex building automation projects successful. The training System Architect Building Automation and Management offers the solution. Students who follow this course at HBO+ level are ready to get a grip on all relevant processes within and outside your company. Registration for the 2023/2024 academic year is now open possible, where FHI members receive a 15 percent discount.

The training is provided by TVVL in collaboration with the FHI Building Automation sector. Martin Douwes, who works at JCI Johnson Controls, can call himself a system architect after completing the course. He took the initiative to take up this course himself, as he says: “I saw the need for taking this course at the time. For me it's about the mindset you have to adopt as a system architect. This way of thinking among technical people is often initially different from what you would want in building automation today. I also discovered this myself, for example in the field of reporting, how to approach a certain consultation or conduct a necessary investigation. During the course you will learn how to approach this differently.”

“This is mainly about communication. As a technician, I always focused on the level of detail. However, you should not do this in the first instance for large building automation projects. That was certainly an eye opener that I got from this course.”

Skills
The list of skills acquired after completing the course is long. For example, a system architect must be able to draw up a functional requirements package for projects and formulate advice in close collaboration with clients. Elements of commissioning also appear during the design and implementation process. Finally, the system architect is ultimately responsible for the realization of a project.

There is also interest in the TVVL training from other sectors, such as Tom Nordkamp. He is a building manager at the top clinical hospital ZGT. The hospital's two buildings already cover 130,000 m2. Nordkamp says about the reason for taking the course: “For me it was a broadening of knowledge and an addition for future work, expansion and further automation within the hospital. From my electrical background, I really had to look further into measurement and control technology. It became easier for me by looking from a 'helicopter view', something that is also continuously indicated within the course.”

Wilco IJzerman works as a measurement and control technology calculator at Johnson Controls. This company supplies, installs and maintains building management systems. IJzerman's interest in this course arose from two sides: "On the one hand, it was a personal interest," he says. “On the other hand, it was also a wish from the employer to take this course.”

IJzerman gained various knowledge that is useful in his profession as a calculator: “You learn a lot about conceptual thinking, but also things like BACnet, IT networks and security are discussed. It is about refreshing knowledge and getting to know new developments in the field.”

Finally, system architect Douwes has an idea to further improve the TVVL course in the future: “The current course fits in well with practice. What I still miss is applying the knowledge gained in work practice. I don't know exactly what form this guidance should take. That is why I try to attract things to myself in order to keep working on the matter.”
