The 'System Architect Building Automation' course will start next October. It will be a tough post-HBO course that was developed on the initiative of the Building Automation industry association together with the TVVL training institute. The Dutch Building Automation Industry Association was founded in 2011 to ensure that buildings actually have functionally working systems, that the user gets what he was promised and what he can expect. The suppliers of automation systems in buildings are partly the same as automation in the industry in buildings: Honeywell, Schneider Electric, Siemens, Johnson Controls. They are very familiar with the need to use system architects for implementation. In addition, system architects must remain standing when parties in the value chain start to tinker with the consistency of a designed system for cost reasons, at the expense of functionality. The fact that the industry has operated within FHI from the start helped in this. In the Industrial Electronics and Industrial Automation industries, the central role of system architects has been recognized and practiced for decades. The training that is about to start consists of three main themes: Building management & ICT, Methods & Skills and Functional subsystems & Installation techniques that can be part of a building automation architecture. It is a training for professionals within building automation who want to develop into technologists with leading responsibility. They translate the function requirements of the building owner and users into adequate and consistent system implementation in the automation and management of buildings. An important part of the training is 'soft skills'. In his role, the system architect must be able to convince and direct others in such a way that the system he has designed remains intact and is not affected by the temptation to cut corners or improvise. 'A half system is no system at all.' The trade association expects that thirty to fifty system architects can be trained annually. Ultimately, every company that wants to be active and successful in the market as a system integrator will need a number of trained system architects. In addition, the engineering and consultancy firms that are active in the real estate market will also increasingly have to have this discipline in-house. Finally, the trends towards the Internet of Things and Smart Buildings/Smart Cities will greatly increase the need for system architects. The trade association and TVVL have set themselves the goal of making and keeping the training as 'future-proof' as possible. New technological developments must be able to be incorporated. With the development and implementation of this training at post-HBO level, the trade association expects to be able to make it clear to the entire value chain of real estate development, realisation and management that investing in technology in buildings must be approached and handled at a higher value and decision-making level than is often the case now. Candidates for the training must have at least one HBO/WO training as a basis in connection with the required work and thinking level. Registration for the training is possible via www.tvvl.nl or via an email message to Liesbeth Zijlstra of the FHI Building Automation sector (l.zijlstra@fhi.nl). For employees of companies that are affiliated with the sector organization, a special member rate applies for following the training.   See also: Report 3, 2016
