On Thursday afternoon, September 14, the FHI members meeting took place with Dr.ir. Meike Nauta as guest speaker. She explained to about 100 interested members how artificial intelligence (AI) works, what the many possible applications are, and why an AI model quickly becomes a black box: you put data in it and something comes out, without any insight into the underlying reasoning. This makes it difficult to deduce whether the right patterns have been found in the data, or whether the model uses shortcuts and biases in the data. Explainable AI and interpretable self-learning algorithms can be an alternative to the black box for many applications. Meike Nauta stimulated, inspired and made the audience aware of the possible risks of AI. Plenty of food for thought at the subsequent networking reception!
