Refractometry, or measuring the refractive index, is a technology that has been known for more than 100 years. With the adoption of PAT (Process Analytical Technology) in pharmaceutical production, inline refractometry was (re)discovered as a valuable method to monitor processes in real time.

Inline refractometers are frequently used in e.g. fractionation processes or for continuous monitoring of ultra- and diafiltration ("dilution" and "filtration"). What makes this technology even more attractive for a highly regulated industry such as pharmaceuticals is that an inline refractometer can be easily periodically validated with certified standards.
