Metric IMS, the sister company of Elincom, has developed a revolutionary technique to make electronics waterproof quickly, cost-efficiently and sustainably, even in low quantities, by means of overmolding with plastic. This method offers the possibility to cast components partially or completely seamlessly, whereby the end result, depending on the plastic material chosen, can be both hard and flexible. This makes the technique extremely versatile and applicable in various industrial applications.
The core of this innovative method lies in the use of advanced 3D-printed molds. Electronic components are placed between two molds, after which the space is filled pneumatically and under low pressure with liquid granulate. By working with lower temperatures and pressures than with traditional injection molding, the molds are less stressful and therefore cheaper and faster to produce. This makes the process not only cost-efficient, but also suitable for creating complex shapes that optimally protect the electronics from external factors.
Metric IMS’s overmolding technology offers more than just protection. In addition to water resistance, the molded plastic can also provide shock resistance, UV resistance and even a customer-specific “look and feel.” Thanks to the flexibility in the production process, it is possible to make recesses or specific shapes in the mold, for example for sensors, connectors or other connections. This makes it possible not only to provide functional protection, but also to create a personalized housing, possibly with an embossed logo.
