Mechanical locks are used in many applications. For example, to secure a system, prevent dangerous situations or limit access to unauthorized persons. Magnet Schultz, represented in the Netherlands by Rotero from Woerden, is the undisputed leader in the field of precision solenoids, including so-called shot bolts. In response to the trend towards miniaturization, the company developed its smallest electromagnetic shot bolt ever. The name: GHUZ007. Most characteristic? Its size barely exceeds that of a hearing aid battery.
Small and even smaller
Miniaturization is a trend in mechanical engineering, among other things, that opens doors to new applications. This includes applications in robotics, battery-powered vehicles and drones. But less advanced, everyday applications can also benefit from it. For example, to prevent a movement from starting before the situation is safe. Or to prevent unauthorized access; for example into a cash drawer.
Only move with explicit permission
The solution is often found in a shot bolt that is controlled by a control system that checks whether the required conditions have been met. Security and access control applications often require that the 'normal' position of a component is 'locked' like a shot bolt. Normally locked. If the power system fails, the shot bolt will then automatically lock; usually by extending the latch and engaging it with a hole in the moving part. This condition can only be remedied when power is available again and the control system indicates that it is safe. This is the 'pull type' shot bolt: extended in normal situations and retracted when energized.
Small but tough
To meet safety and size requirements, Magnet Schultz developed the smallest electromagnetic shot bolt ever: a cylinder with a length of only 20 mm and a diameter of 7 mm. Equipped with an M6 threaded end for mounting on a frame or panel. The 2.5 mm latch provides a lateral force of 15 N. When energized (12 VDC), the latch will extend 1 mm from the housing, releasing the locked part. A simple, elegant and highly reliable solution for a wide range of lock/unlock applications with a service life of up to 1 million cycles.
