Processing large amounts of data quickly is a challenge for cloud solutions. End-to-end solutions for Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) can only be developed in combination with edge computing, i.e. data processing, data management, data backup and data provision at the point of origin. To automatically maintain machine systems, sensors continuously transmit various data values from the devices to the cloud.

Once the values reach the cloud, the measurement data is analyzed for specific deflections, such as overheating or wear. When the data stream generated by the various and increasingly distributed sensors can no longer be processed with the necessary low latency, this can lead to major damage, such as when vulnerable machines overheat in a short time, then the cloud becomes a bottleneck.

At this point the Edge technology of MB connect line help you. With the mbEDGE you can use the Remote Access routers mbNET and mbNET.rokey upgrade to a true Edge Gateway. The software suite on the SD card contains the IOT Node-RED kit, the container platform Docker and the open source management tool Portainer. By using pre-configured nodes as an interface, to the remote service portal mbCONNECT24 or common cloud providers, the data is transferred to the cloud. The graphical user interface and the individual function modules, such as an HTTP request, SMS alarm or the integration of mathematical functions, make it very easy to create Edge functions. There are also function blocks in which JavaScript can be used. If this is not enough, you can also write your own blocks in JavaScript to create your desired functionality. After you have created the desired structure by arranging the blocks and connections, one click is enough to switch your own application to a live working application.

The IOT construction kit Node-RED comes in a docker container. The containers themselves contain all components of the application in the correct version. Docker is an ideal way to encapsulate complete applications and use them in the Remote Access Routers. Updates and security patches can be implemented very easily. This is an important aspect for long-term support, especially in the industrial sector. Portainer allows the user to easily manage their Docker Containers in the mbEDGE.advanced version in a graphical user interface. Creating new containers or restricting certain user groups is also easy to achieve via the user interface. Detailed information such as logs, paths or runtime can be read for each container. Even a console can be started via the administration. For simple and practical management of Docker Containers, Portainer offers enough features to make container management even easier to use.
