Last week, MCS was at Unmanned Valley, a place with a rich history. Formerly a naval base for radar planes, among other things, the site is now used for another well-known purpose: the longest-running musical, Soldaat van Oranje (Soldier of Orange), is being staged here.
But that wasn't why MCS colleagues Chris van Dongen and Bas Piek came to Katwijk. We joined them for a test day using drones to map offshore network coverage!
Special field lab for drone initiatives
The Unmanned Valley is a special campus for drone initiatives and sensor-related technology. And co-partner in the Do IoT Field Lab from Delft University of Technology. You can obtain your drone pilot certificate there, but there are also several flight boxes where tests on the 5G network can be performed.
Mapping 4G/5G network coverage in the North Sea
And Chris and Bas went to support those tests. Together with Nathan Janssen from Drocean We went to Katwijk to simulate a 4G/5G coverage test on the North Sea.
Drocean offers a unique solution for mapping 4G/5G network coverage in the North Sea in detail. They aim to stimulate innovation within the Dutch maritime sector. The collected data can help other companies develop solutions that require 5G.
Test results from multiple drones
During the test day, we used various test sets on top of multiple drones to map coverage using a cleverly pre-programmed grid. We also compared the test results of the different methods.
The weather cooperated well and after a considerable number of flying hours we were able to conclude that all the test results were available and the analysis could be worked on in the office.
