Electromagnetic motion tracking systems work using a low-frequency magnetic field generator, the 3D emitter and one or more 3D sensors. Transmitter and receiver have special 3D magnetic coils whose magnetic field must lie exactly in the middle of the 3 windings. These 3D coils generate and receive magnetic field signals, allowing the 6 degrees of freedom to be detected accurately and quickly. This includes translations, i.e. XYZ position, as well as rotation, i.e. roll, pitch and yaw.
Premo is the market leader for these components and has an extensive range of standard coils. Both extremely small, suitable for tracking fingertips or instruments during an operation, but also larger versions to optimize accuracy and distance.
These magnetic tracking systems are used in VR glasses, industrial robots, medical surgical robots, movement sciences, human-machine interface and drones, among others.
