Review Power Electronics & Energy Storage event 2023

Power electronics and energy storage play an essential role in the transition from fossil fuels to sustainable energy sources. Companies must become more sustainable and this can only be done by dealing more intelligently with the generation, storage and use of energy. The fact that the electronics industry has climate goals high on the agenda became clear during the Power Electronics & Energy Storage, on 27 June in 's-Hertogenbosch. Almost three hundred visitors and more than a hundred exhibitors attended the event and at some lectures even chairs had to be added.

Professor Thiago Batista Soeiro of the University of Twente kicked off the event with an intriguing presentation on the electrification of the maritime sector. A topic that appeals to the imagination, as was evident from the many reactions from a packed room.

The storage and management of batteries for huge vehicles that are on the road for long periods of time poses technological challenges. This applies not only on the water, but also in the air. The lecture by Patrick Koch and Leonard Malburg on the electrification of aircraft was therefore also met with great interest from the audience.

Storage energy
During the event, visitors had the choice of twenty-nine substantive lectures on a wide range of current themes from the sector. For example, Raúl Ramón of EPIC Power gave a lecture on behalf of Elincom Electronics on energy storage, a much-discussed topic within the industry. The advantages and disadvantages of batteries, solar panels, electrolysers and fuel cells were reviewed and extensively commented on. Ramón concluded that there is no single 'winner', but that different storage technologies are needed to ensure a reliable electricity grid.

See, feel and experience
Unique during the event was the opportunity to put the theory into practice immediately during the workshop and live demonstrations on the exhibition floor. Both visitors and exhibitors were enthusiastic about this setup. “A picture is worth a thousand words. Visitors want to see, feel and experience the equipment,” Sven de Coster of CN Rood summed up the general feeling succinctly.

Pieter Levecque of Battolyser Systems closed the event with a lecture on an ingenious battery that produces hydrogen. He focused in particular on the role of the supply chain and the chain partners in scaling up 'a nice idea in a lab' to a working prototype with international commercial potential.
