AC/DC converters with high switching frequencies can now be found in almost every electronic device. These inverters are very efficient, but can also emit so-called supraharmonic currents (between 2kHz and 150kHz) on the grid. ElaadNL, the knowledge and innovation center in the field of charging infrastructure and Smart Charging, conducts research into the influences of charging electric vehicles on the grid and grid management. In his presentation on Energy Storage, Thijs van Wijk from ElaadNL discusses the research conducted into the influence of the AC/DC conversion during charging on power Quality and vice versa.
Power Quality is an important part of the charging process. Poor power quality leads to more heating of grid assets and therefore more grid losses and a reduction in transport capacity. Problems can also arise with other electronic devices and they can even malfunction. Supraharmonic disturbances in particular can cause these problems, partly because there are (yet) no admission requirements or standards in this area.
The influence of these supraharmonics on the grid and connected devices and the steps towards standard development are amply discussed in this lecture.
