The EMC-ESD association, together with the University of Twente, visited Marcel van der Horst at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences on April 25, 2024 to inspire students for the broad field of Electromagnetic Compatibility. The association (and UT) were represented by Tom Hartman, Dasha Nemashkalo and Niek Moonen.

We engaged in a discussion with approximately 30 electrical engineering students from the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences and several applied physics students, together with university staff in a large open workspace, resulting in a lot of interactions with the students. Initially, we gave a one-hour presentation, covering the basics of EMC, discussing typical EMI cases with a high societal impact, followed by deeper insights into parasitic effects in components. We also explained how Power Quality is an integral part of EMC, as power fluctuations can lead to electromagnetic disturbances. Finally, we illustrated these concepts with practical examples and demonstrations.

In the second part of the day, the students gained practical experience by performing the demonstrations themselves. Three experimental setups were available:

– Experimental printed circuit boards focusing on the parasitic behavior of components.

– Measurement of Power Quality using a “break out box” for safe use of 230V.

– Demonstration of smart meter interference.

The students were actively involved and seemed very interested. We hope that many will sign up as free student members and attend more of our events.
