Said Mokiem and Wouter Meijeringh work in one of the fastest growing markets in the Netherlands; electric transport. They successfully completed the new two-day course Installing charging stations according to NEN 3140 VP. After completing the certification, they received the NEN 3140 Installation of charging stations certificate. What did they think of the training?

Busy times
The Netherlands presents itself as a leader in the field of electric transport. In order to seize opportunities for green growth and simultaneously reduce CO2 emissions. These are busy times for installers and technicians who set up the charging infrastructure and charging stations. Said, owner of MTS Communications & Maintenance in The Hague, recognizes this: 'There is a lot of demand for people who can properly take care of the installations. I am self-employed and this is an opportunity. I have a telecom background and come to Dirksen every 2 to 3 years for the mandatory KPN certifications. That's how I came to this training.'

Jack-of-all-trades
Wouter works for OR Montage. He is at home in all markets; can operate a tap, but can also connect Ziggo customers just as easily. He is eager to learn and has the ambition to grow further to Project Manager of Charging Stations. He already had some experience with connecting charging stations and says enthusiastically: 'I still have a photo of the work carried out. Of course as proof of the successful delivery, but this photo is extra special because of the beautiful electric car.' His employer signed him up for the training.

How do you connect a charging point?
The training in installing charging stations takes two days. On the first day you will work with NEN 3140 and NEN 1010. NEN 3140 is about the interaction between people and the electrical installation. The application of NEN 1010 is legally required during the design and construction of an electric charging station installation and also during the first inspection prior to putting the charging point into use. The second day is about the installation of the charging stations and inclusion in an IP network.

First theory, then practice
Attention is paid to theory and practice. According to Said, the theory is doable: 'With an electrical background you can go a long way.' Wouter overestimated himself: 'My theory was not as perfect as I hoped. I expected different questions. My electrical knowledge has been refreshed again. I also have a clear picture of the roles defined within NEN 3140, what the VOP (Sufficiently Instructed Person) is and who is responsible for whom.'

Get started with charging stations yourself
In the afternoon, the students were allowed to roll up their sleeves and connect two charging points. The practical lesson made Wouter very happy: 'The teacher (a really nice guy) explained it very playfully. You learn to work with various types of charging stations, ground cables and components in the distribution box.' Said says that he likes to work with his hands: 'I was also eager to get started myself.'

Educational training
According to Wouter and Said, the entire training was very educational and easy to follow. Said: 'And if you didn't know something, you were helped well. I had some questions about setting up the software, which the teacher answered later.' The course concludes with a certification at the end of day 2. Both men passed this and received the NEN 3140 Installation of charging stations certificate.
