The megatrends in technology are given a new name almost every year. Many FHI members are at the basis of these technological developments. They therefore continuously recognize the common thread: connectivity, digitalization and intelligence.

So it does not matter whether Industry 4.0, smart industry, smart cities, internet of things, big data, machine-to-machine communication, data science or artificial intelligence are discussed. Ultimately it comes back to the three pillars mentioned.

Well, I haven't written anything about nanotechnology, photonics, quantum computing, robotics, autonomous transport, wearables and blockchain. There is a lot going on and a lot is possible. What happens in practice?

FHI members offer sensors, networks, instrumentation, systems and integration. This is the basis for connectivity, digitalization and intelligence in all kinds of industrial applications and within the built environment.

It still proves difficult to show the real pearls to members' customers. The best examples are discussed during events and fairs, but the fourth industrial revolution has not yet been so widely spread that we stumble over the many obvious cases. We are at the beginning and an acceleration is expected.

The fact that members can learn from each other and complement each other is evident from the meeting on June 26, 2019 about data science. We call such sessions 'interaction between branches', because members of all FHI branches discuss a generic theme.

To realize the benefits of the megatrends mentioned, more intensive cooperation is simply necessary. The qualities of different players in a business chain must be used in an integrated manner. That is quite a process and certainly not a dead end.

At the start of a project, one must be able to take into account the end with expertise, namely the effective use of a system or a building. Business chains must unite to make data science useful.
