Additives help to enhance, minimize or modify the properties of the base oil so that it meets the desired performance requirements. There are different types of additives and of course they all have their own characteristics, but what are they exactly?
What categories of additives are there in lubricants?
The different types of additives can be divided into three categories: viscosity index improvers, boundary lubricant additives and other additives. The name viscosity index improver says it all, it improves the viscosity index. Boundary lubrication additives are added to improve friction and wear under boundary lubrication conditions. These include anti-wear additives, extreme pressure additives and friction modifying additives. Other additives include corrosion inhibitors, detergent additives, dispersant additives, anti-foam additives and antioxidants.
Measuring the properties of lubricants with NIR
The properties of lubricants can be easily determined with the MicroNIR PAT-U from Viavi. A very small spectrometer, without moving parts.
