Encoders are used to convert angular or linear movements into electrical signals that contain information about the magnitude and direction of movement. This electrical signal is then read by a control device in a motion control system (storage servers, digital readout devices) after which this information is used to control moving parts of the device.

The Precizika Metrology photoelectric encoder works on the principle of light modulation or magnetic technology and a combination of permanent magnets and magnetic sensors to detect movement and position.

An absolute encoder is a device that provides true (absolute) positional information, because it uses a unique code for each position (unique bit configurations). The resolution is equal to 2n (n = number of bits output) and the encoder uses gray or binary coding, which can be translated into different protocols. This encoder type is normally used to monitor the position of the object during switching on and off. Unlike incremental encoders, the encoded output provides the ability to read the object position without moving the encoder. A single-turn absolute encoder measures the absolute position within 1 revolution/revolution, which can be read directly and quickly by the control systems, while a multi-turn absolute encoder not only indicates the position within one revolution, but also the number of revolutions relative to a reference point.
