The benefits of a good BMS (Battery Management System)
The BMS monitors and controls the charging and discharging of rechargeable lithium batteries. It ensures the quality of the cells and battery and the safety of the complete battery pack. These systems are used in almost all devices that contain a rechargeable battery, such as mobile phones, (electric) cars, e-bikes and even data centers. There is a lot of distinction in the functions and possibilities of a Battery management system.
A basic BMS measures the voltage and stops charging when the maximum voltage is reached. In the event of dangerous conditions and irregularities, the system issues a warning alarm.
A more complex BMS also monitors and influences battery life and performance and provides an even better safety system. These more complex systems can monitor both single-cell and multi-cell battery systems. Multi-cell systems can monitor and control the conditions of individual cells. Some 'smart' systems can even monitor and log the performance and possible defects of the batteries via, for example, a computer or app.
At Energy Storage 2020, Sander Kool will give Engineering Spirit An presentation about the three success factors of a good BMS. With his presentation he helps designers/companies get started by discussing the three most important reasons why damage is suffered if the wrong BMS choice is made.
