Last week, Martijn Claassens (Head of Sales) and Jean-Philippe Aerts (Head of Products) attended The Things Conference at the Kromhouthal in Amsterdam. This annual event from The Things Industries is all about the "things" of the Internet of Things (IoT). And as Managed IoT experts, we couldn't miss this event!

In this blog, we share the most important themes in the IoT world that we saw at The Things Conference.

Discover new IoT innovations

What was immediately striking was the wide diversity of attendees. From techies and hobbyists to decision-makers from large companies and distribution partners, everyone was there to see what's happening in the world of IoT.

Many companies presented their solutions on the trade show floor. Think of:

  • Smart sensors for monitoring temperature, humidity, CO₂, electricity, water and movement, among other things.
  • Modules and connectivity through LoRaWAN, WiFi, Bluetooth, Mioty, LTE(-M) and 5G.
  • Device management software, which allows you to manage devices such as routers and sensors and easily roll out updates over the air.

The most important trends and themes in IoT

The presentations and panel discussions were spread across a large main stage and two smaller rooms. Clear trends and themes emerged, such as:

  • 5G and IoT: thanks to 5G RedCap (reduced capacity) more and more use cases are coming within reach.
  • Security: due to the growth of cyber attacks and legislation such as NIS2 this topic is higher on the agenda than ever.
  • Device management: Remotely updating firmware is essential to keep devices secure and future-proof.
  • Energy consumptionManufacturers are working on longer battery life and even battery-free solutions, for example, by harvesting energy from temperature differences.
  • Edge computing: more and more intelligence is shifting from the 'core' to the 'edge'.
  • Compliance: Compliance with laws and regulations remains an important priority.
  • New standards: besides the well-known networks, mioty, an LPWAN protocol, was also conspicuously present.

Using IoT even smarter for partners

Besides knowledge sharing, The Things Conference was also an excellent opportunity to connect with clients and make new contacts! The discussions provided a wealth of inspiration on how we can leverage IoT solutions even more effectively, together with customers and partners.

Knowing more?

For Jean-Philippe and Martijn, this was a valuable day full of insights and new ideas. The Things Conference shows how quickly IoT continues to develop. And how many opportunities there are to make processes more efficient with smart applications. We'll definitely be there again next year. Will you?
