Jos Ruijter shows in his presentation during the Bits, Bricks & Behavior conference (November 9 in De Kuip in Rotterdam) how the largest and smartest bi-directional EV charging square in the world was realized. This took place on the grounds of the ASR head office in Utrecht. The speaker talks about ASR's motives to carry out this Green Parking project, what challenges there were and how this project went.

Innovative points of ASR's Green Parking are the 275 bi-directional charging stations, an integrated PV carport with 5,000 m² of solar panels, electrical storage and a DC backbone. An advanced energy management system allows all these components to work together with the Building Automation system using predictive algorithms.

The unique and innovative character is further underlined by collaboration with Elaad.nl, University of Twente, AmperaPark, Mennekes and Kropman Installation Technology in a MOOI project called SmoothEMS with GridShield.

The special thing about this project is that the possibility of system failure due to overload or cyber attacks is explicitly taken into account. In essence, the Energy Management System regulates charging and all other flows (consumption and generation) at that location, the building and the grid. In this system, the safety margin can be much smaller. The GridShield registers the energy flows in real time and if they fall outside the safety margins of the grid, the charging speed is temporarily reduced or possibly stopped.
