Recently, MCS'ers Timo Medvedev and Jan van Rossum had the honor of giving a guest lecture at the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences (HRO). With a room full of enthusiastic students from the AD ICT Internet of Things program, they looked at the wonders of EDGE computing. And how this is used in practice for IoT applications. The positive energy in the room was almost tangible and it quickly became clear to them that the future of technology is in good hands with this group of young innovators!

What is edge computing?

For those who are less familiar with the term, EDGE computing is a method of processing data closer to the source of the data, such as on an IoT device itself, rather than in the cloud. The idea is to reduce latency, use bandwidth efficiently, and enable fast, real-time responses. In addition, you save a lot of costs on bandwidth, cloud storage, and cloud processing.

IoT in practice

During the guest lecture, Jan and Timo looked at a number of practical examples of how EDGE computing is used in IoT applications today. From simple monitoring of temperature limits to advanced local AI image processing for people counting.

Using technology responsibly

The students responded very positively to these examples. What struck Timo and Jan in particular was the students’ ability to think beyond current applications. Questions about privacy, security and the ethical implications of autonomous decision-making showed that they are not only interested in what technology can do, but also in how it can be used responsibly.

Future-oriented blanket

What struck the MCS students most about the day was the students’ forward-looking outlook. In their questions and discussions, they looked ahead to the potential of EDGE computing in combination with IoT. For example, how can we transform healthcare by using real-time patient monitoring? Or how can we reduce our ecological footprint by making logistics processes smarter and more efficient?

Inspired by the next generation of technologists

The guest lecture at HRO Rotterdam was not only an opportunity to share knowledge, but also to get inspired by the next generation of technologists. With so much enthusiasm, positive energy and a clear hunger for knowledge, Jan and Timo are convinced that the future of EDGE computing and IoT is in very capable hands. They are already looking forward to the next opportunity to get together with this inspiring group and further explore how technology can transform our world in ways we can barely imagine.
