On October 12, 2022, we as an EMC-ESD association in combination with the University of Twente visited association member Piet Slenders of Fontys University of Applied Sciences in Eindhoven, to get students enthusiastic about the field. On behalf of the association (and UT), three student members: Tom Hartman, Dasha Nemashkalo and Cathrine Feloups, traveled together with board member Niek Moonen.
We were able to do this for a 30+ number of Fontys electrical engineering students in combination with various employees of the university. We first gave a presentation of about an hour in the large open workspace. This included some basic knowledge of EMC, followed by some deeper information on parasitic effects in components and crosstalk, and finally these concepts were put into context using practical examples and demonstrations. In the second part of the day, the students were able to gain hands-on experience by performing the demonstrations themselves.
Four experimental tasks were available:
- PCB experiment boards, with crosstalk and parasitic behavior of components as main topics
- A sensor that was disturbed by a motor drive system
- Measuring Power Quality using a “break out box” to work safely with 230V
- TEM cell measurements where two “identical” class D amplifiers were compared
The students have been busy and, in our opinion, were very interested. We hope that several others will sign up free student member and perhaps attend our events.
