Industrial Networks Market Shares 2020 According to HMS Networks

Market shares 2020 according to HMS Networks – fieldbus, industrial Ethernet and wireless

Industrial network connectivity for devices and machines is the key to realizing smart connected factories. HMS Networks’ annual industrial network market survey shows that Industrial Ethernet has further increased its market share to 64% of newly installed nodes (59% last year), while fieldbuses fall back to 30% (35%). The leading networks EtherNet/IP and PROFINET take first place with 17% each. Wireless technologies remain at a market share of 6%.

HMS Networks presents its annual analysis of the industrial networking market, focusing on newly installed nodes in factory automation worldwide. As an independent supplier of solutions for industrial communication and the Industrial Internet of Things, HMS has a clear insight into the industrial networking market. The 2020 study includes estimated market shares for fieldbuses, industrial Ethernet and Wireless. The estimated growth figures have not been included this year, as the unique market circumstances due to the coronavirus situation have not been taken into account.

Industrial Ethernet market share increases, fieldbuses continue to decline

In the study, HMS concludes that Industrial Ethernet continues to take market share from fieldbuses. Industrial Ethernet now accounts for 64% of the global market for new installed nodes in factory automation (compared to 59% last year). EtherNet/IP and PROFINET share the top spot with 17% each. EtherCAT continues to perform well globally with 7% and Modbus-TCP with 5% just overtakes Ethernet POWERLINK with 4%.

Fieldbus market shares continue to decline

HMS expects a drop of the fieldbus to 30% of the newly installed nodes (compared to 35% last year). PROFIBUS is still number one with 8%, for the first time less than 10% of the total industrial network market. Numbers two are Modbus-RTU with 5%, followed by CC-Link with 4%.

Commentary on Industrial Ethernet and Fieldbus Market Shares

“We expect the industrial networking market to grow steadily over the coming years, but due to the unique corona virus situation that is now affecting business conditions worldwide, we have chosen not to include growth figures in our 2020 analysis, but only market shares,” says Anders Hansson, Chief Marketing Officer at HMS Networks. “So if we focus only on market shares this year, we see that Industrial Ethernet continues to drive industrial connectivity in factories, led by EtherNet/IP and PROFINET, with EtherCAT in third place.” Hansson continues: “PROFIBUS is still the largest fieldbus, but has lost market share due to the continuous decline of fieldbuses. Another interesting finding is that Modbus continues to perform well – both in terms of the fieldbus Modbus RTU, and the Ethernet-based Modbus-TCP, indicating that manufacturers are not refraining from implementing well-functioning technologies in their new installations just because they have been on the market for some time.”

Wireless remains stable and looks good for the future

Wireless technologies maintain a market share of 6%, with WLAN still the most popular, followed by Bluetooth. “Wireless maintains its market share in a growing market, which is not bad, but we expect Wireless’ share to grow over time,” says Anders Hansson. “With all the ongoing activity globally around wireless mobile technologies (e.g. private LTE/5G networks) as a driver for next-level smart manufacturing, the demand for wirelessly connected devices and machines in future less wired and flexible automation architectures will increase.”

Regional network variations

EtherNet/IP and PROFINET are leading in Europe and the Middle East, with PROFIBUS and EtherCAT a close second. Other popular networks are Modbus (RTU/TCP) and Ethernet POWERLINK. The US market is dominated by EtherNet/IP, with EtherCAT gaining some market share. PROFINET and EtherNet/IP are number one in a fragmented Asian market, followed by PROFIBUS, EtherCAT, Modbus (RTU/TCP) and CC-Link/CC-Link IE Field.
