The interchangeability of drives
We are regularly asked “What should you pay attention to when replacing a reduction gear?”. In case of major maintenance of the factory, the choice of a new supplier or in case of an adjustment and/or improvement to the machine. The first step is a logical, but very important step when selecting a new drive.
What's next?
Visualize the current drive, both in terms of mounting dimensions, shaft dimensions and performance. Are you missing information?
Most information can be found online or requested somewhere. The weight in combination with the design and axle size already reveals a lot about the current drive. In addition, describe the operating cycles of the drive in combination with the environment and any additional external variables such as ambient temperature, environmental requirements (ATEX?), any active external radial or axial forces and the application. With this information, a good advisor already has a good idea of the first selection.
What could be better?
Does the current drive require relatively much maintenance? Does it need to be replaced more often than usual? Should costs be reduced? Availability is poor or delivery time is very long?
These are all considerations when looking for a new supplier or an alternative product. There is always the question of whether the grass is greener elsewhere, but a point has been reached to start looking around. When looking for improvements, pay attention not only to the product, but also to the possible new supplier. Is it a distributor with added value or is the contact direct with the manufacturer? What are you actually looking for? Does this new supplier offer what you are looking for?
1 to 1 interchangeable
In most cases, a 1-to-1 interchangeable product does not exist. There are almost always differences in quality, weight, (hollow) shaft dimensions and the design of a drive. Unlike electric motors, gearboxes are not directly subject to a specific IEC directive. At Rossi, we have always made the choice to opt for quality and a relatively high power density, and a compact design with plenty of mounting options. We recently also introduced the Rossi iFit series, which is 1-on-1 interchangeable with the largest brands.
Production will be fully operational in 2022 Rossi iFit Series coaxial in-line gearboxes with a 1 to 1 interchangeable gearbox in both dimensions and performance.
The iFit series can be supplied with a very short delivery time and it is a European product from our own factories in Italy.
